The Earth is ruled by the authoritarian Mandate, which like all such governments is constantly alert for threats to its stability. This extends to its scientific research: although the Mandate has explored space and discovered a number of exoplanets (a few of which have some form of life), it still insists that scientific discoveries must support the philosophy of the Mandate, which holds that human beings are the pinnacle of creation and that other life forms must all be in the process of striving to achieve that same state of being.

Ecologist and xeno-ecologist Arton Daghdev chafes against both these mental manacles and the Mandate in general. Some time before the story opens, he becomes part of a cell of would-be revolutionaries. After discovery of his improper views and rebellious actions, he is sentenced to what is meant to be a short life assisting research on the planet Imno 27g, casually known as Kiln for the strange clusters of pottery buildings scattered over its surface.

Life as a prisoner on Kiln within the research enclave is brutal in all the ways any such prison can be, when the prisoners are nothing but human-shaped machinery to accomplish the goals of their jailers. The Mandate's leadership has absolute control over who among their prisoners lives or dies, and if anyone should harbor the intent to escape, the environment outside the base is all too lively. The death rate among the workers is appalling, but new shipments of convicted crooks and malcontents arrive all the time, so it hardly matters.

None of the weird aliens seem to be builders of the sort needed to create the clusters of mysterious structures or indeed intelligent in any way beyond, perhaps, the level of social insects on Earth. Yet somehow the small, dysfunctional cadre of scientists on Kiln must serve up the desired tidbits of discovery to keep their commandant happy with them: evidence that there once were intelligent humanoids on Kiln.

Cut for more, including some spoilers )

I am an emotional person, and I want to like at least some of the characters about whom I'm reading. Daghdev is prickly, snarky, and fatalistic — but then, he has cause. He's also an unreliable narrator who only reveals to the reader what he wants, when he wants. The situation is really excruciating: people with a deep dislike of body horror might want to avoid this book. And there is not, in fact, a happy ending (at least not IMO).

On the other hand, this is very well written. For me, it moved along at a fantastic clip, and when I went back to check some particulars for this write-up, I found myself reading far more than I had intended because the story caught me up again. Some of the scientific ideas reminded me of other works (Sue Burke's Semiosis surfaced in my thoughts a couple of time), and sometimes I was reminded of something more elusive, a source that I can't recall. Does anyone else who has already read this have thoughts on the book's likely ancestors?

From my viewpoint, this was one of the most "science fictional" of this year's finalists. I think it might be my first choice in the vote.

The Mysterious Ouija Board

On this day in 1890, the Ouija Board had its commercial introduction as a harmless parlor game.

A Ouija board is a rectangle of wood or cardboard printed with the alphabet, the numbers 0-9 and the words yes, no, and goodbye. Players put their fingers on a triangular planchette and ask questions of the spirits, who answer by moving the planchette around the board. Of course, we know how this goes: it’s malicious entities who respond and then they kill everybody. That’s the trope. But it wasn’t always like that.

The Ouija began as a benign religious practice of Civil War-era Spiritualists, who were seeking to contact beloved family members who had died or met the more horrifying fate of vanishing into the theater of war. The board’s darker reputation began with the 1973 movie The Exorcistwhich showed demonic consequences for playing.

Check out the blog post for more on the mysterious talking board, plus writing prompts, such as:

Call in the spirits. The Ouija board was built for necromancy: divination (seeking supernatural knowledge) from the dead. Of course, the practice of begging data from the dearly departed began long before the board came about. But the Ouija makes it easy. So let’s dial up the deceased.

(Pro-tip: You can DIY a Ouija board by drawing numbers and letters on a flat surface and using an upside down glass as a planchette.)

Possibilities for benign contact include loving family members who pass on reassurances about the afterlife, ghosts with info on random stuff like lottery numbers, ghosts of murder victims who wish to name their killers, or creative types who want to help you write novels (looking at you, Patience Worth).

But of course, you can also phone up the fiendish: convicted killers, undiscovered killers, relatives you thought were kind who were actually killers, ghosts who like mean pranks, ghosts who just plain hate the living, and the biggest danger: dead dudes who would like to live a second life. Possession by spirits is a favorite Ouija trope, and you often get there by breaking a rule while playing the “game,” which can be anything you like: don’t play alone, don’t try to contact the very recently dead, don’t play without a piece of iron in your pocket, etc.

O Frabjous Day!

Last week was a very good week! I got tons accomplished, and also this week there's a three-day weekend coming up. Unfortunately, a Huge Busy Thing will be starting at work the week after that, but I will continue to enjoy the (comparatively relaxing) moment for now.

Here we go:
  • Exchanges due in May/June ([community profile] hurtcomfortex, [community profile] pickmeupexchange, [community profile] idproquo, [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles, [community profile] diegetic_exchange, [community profile] fandom5k + mystery pinch-hits and treats): Still done at 12/12. It looks like Hurt/Comfort and Pick-Me-Up might reveal this week, so I need to do my final real-through/edits for those.

  • [community profile] idproquo is done and complete!

    • My fantastic gift was tainted bliss by MoonGoddex, who wrote me the Phoenix/Edgeworth ritual fucking over the prosecution bench porn AU of my dreams! I have seriously wanted this fic since I first played AA1, and my brain just could not write it because it wanted to read it so badly, and this fic is just perfect! Exactly what I've wanted for YEARS now! ❤️❤️❤️

    • For my assignment, I wrote Cuckoo for Zeus cuckolding Hera with Ganymede from Greek mythology. I had a lot of fun getting inside Hera's head and making her relatable, and also of course writing filthy Zeus/Ganymede porn. I was a HUGE mythology nerd as a kid, and it started with the Greek myths, and my BA is actually in Classics, so I've enjoyed getting to revisit that in fic form recently. (Porn fic is a lot more fun to write than my BA thesis was, lol.)

    • I also picked up a pinch hit: Easement, House/Wilson hurt/comfort (for House M.D.). These two were an OTP of mine years and years ago, although I dropped off when House started dating Cuddy, and then I heard about Wilson's cancer and kind of just didn't want to go back after learning that. But for whatever reason, YouTube in all its wisdom decided to drop House/Wilson compilation clips on me, so I ended up watching a bajillion of those (including the ending scene) plus rereading my old House fics. And then this prompt came up, and I got plot-bunnied, and there it is! House and Wilson were always fun to write, so I enjoyed getting to do so again.

  • Exchanges due in July/August ([community profile] caseficexchange, [community profile] nonconex, [community profile] justmarriedexchange, Terrible Temperature Troubles flash + mystery pinch-hits and treats + future stuff): I am at 2/5, and one of the two completed is the long-fic! *\o/* I feel very accomplished by this, and I like the way it turned out, too. So I'm well ahead of my goal there. The other part of my goal was to plot out one of my other assignments, and I've sort of started that: one of my assignments is a fairly narrow and specific prompt (which is unusual for me!) so I know generally what I'll be writing, but I have to come up with the right angle to make the fic more interesting than just generic trope. One of my goals this (short) week is to review some parts of canon to try to come up with my "hook". A second goal is that I signed up for the Temperature flash, and I'll need to write that this week. No clue why suddenly flash exchanges seem so appealing to me, but I'm going with the flow. I need to wait until I get my assignment for that one, though. My third goal is that I want to complete one of my remaining assignments (ideally the one that needs canon-review, but if not the other which is for a canon current in my mind). And, if I have even more time, then I'll just have to grab up a pinch-hit. We'll see if that works out on top of everything else. 😝 So, by next week, I want to be at 4/5 and maybe even 5/6.

  • Potentials for July/August: I threw in some nominations for [community profile] littleblackdressex just in case, since some other people made some interesting nominations too. It's currently in sign-ups, but there's nothing tempting yet. I'll keep my eye on it, though. I didn't end up nominating anything for [community profile] raremaleslashex. Unless someone posts a truly AMAZING sign-up, I'm pretty sure I'm sitting this one out. I'm waiting on [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles for early August for sure. [community profile] rarepairexchange & [community profile] iddyiddybangbang remain vague possibilities on a distant horizon. I suspect most of what I'll be doing in July/August is pinch-hitting and treating.

  • Or, if not, I could always finish Femslash Salad Bar. Hey, it could happen! 🤣

  • Nearing the end of BNHA S2. Still enjoyable. Looking forward to seeing Deku and Bakugo having to work together on the final exam. I will need popcorn for that one! 🤣🍿

  • Oops, I miscounted and Noblesse is actually 100 chapters longer than I thought it was! So, no, I definitely did not finish last week. And probably won't this week either (but maybe the week after?). I continue to enjoy the interactions around the core characters and especially around the school, but: Whoa boy! My days of finding werewolves boring sure are coming to a middle. 🫤 This last arc and a half has been rough! Too many battles, too many werewolves. More scenes of Rai getting thwarted by doors, plz!

  • I have a huge-normous skating competition at the end of July, which intersects terribly with my incredibly busy schedule at work. So, yeah, I anticipate feeling very tired and over-stretched throughout July, not even counting exchanges and fandom. That's part of the reason I want all my assignments complete ASAP, so I don't have to factor in those on my schedule as well.

  • I do, indeed, have [community profile] pinchhitbingo. However, I want to go through the whole year and see how much more of my board I can fill out before claiming it.

Goals for this week: 1) Finish plotting/canon-review for my 1 assignment. 2) Get & complete my Temperature Flash assignment. 3) Complete one additional assignment. 4) Edits for fics being revealed this week. 5) Keep watching BNHA. 6) Keep reading Noblesse.

End of June totals: I am at 152k word-count for the year, and have apparently written 61 fics?! 😲 And the 61 fics are only the ones that have had author-reveals so far, too. I...frankly am astounded by this. It doesn't feel like I'm writing that much. But I guess a little bit every day, every week, adds up!

I read a lot of MASH fic recently, and while most of it was very good, there were also a ton of inaccuracies about what mid-century America was like. I'm not an expert, but at the same time, I did listen to my parents and grandparents when they talked about what life was like when they were younger. And also, I know what's changed within my lifetime (born in 1982), and quite a lot of things people today take for granted are actually new within my lifetime, and thus not around prior to the 1980s. Now, this is fanfic, and if you don't care about historical accuracy in your fic, that is a fine and valid choice and I salute you. If, however, you do want to at least try to avoid major gaffes, here are things I've noticed that people get wrong a lot:

Women's rights: Ms. )

Travel )

Money and Credit )Alcohol )

Childcare )

Phone Calls )

Progressive Ideas )

The Ad Council )

These are just a few of the things that have changed in the last fifty years. And, of course, I'm only one person and might have got things wrong. Let me know if you see things I missed

If it’s any …

It isn’t.

I just thought …

Don’t. Your thoughts are. Hesitation. Rudimentary. But sincere. I recognize that.

Well. For most …

Stop. Please. I’m not most.

Silence, broken then with.

There is no comfort, no consolation, you see? There is only a letting go. My releasing. Mine. It is a great sluicing of water from off the skin when surfacing out of the depths. A leprosy in which the body sheds its recognizable humanity. Akin to fire, flooding, all the great equalizers of the human spirit is loss.

No pain can be endless.

Time lessens, nothing heals. Perhaps the final loss, the dissolution of self. There is that momentary pause in which the soul tells the self rest rest rest now. With those strange urgent shushings the mind exhales and closes an interior eye and the soul sighs and the body relaxes.

Always with the most extreme of analogies.

It’s how I process. How I’m formed. The shape of me in this incarnation is allegorical. I admit it. Is it unbearable of me to explain a poetic inclination?

Of course not.

Catch me in one of those expirations then. That numbing prelude to a sleep brought on by the physical and existential exhaustion of the quivering small beast caught in the snare incapable of the final severing of the trapped limb. Perhaps, between respirations I will show gratitude for whatever platitude you long to utter. With such kindness in the dulcet tones of your compassion.

So insulting. But I forgive you.

It is no kindness to me. I’m admitting this to you now so that there can be no misunderstanding between us afterwards. In the quiet of acceptance, in the weaking of the bleeding out. You offered me not a ligature, not even a bandage, only the word bandage. Followed by an expectation of a deed done well. Yet, I will nod and listen insomuch as I am able before the next suck breath moment in which I am once again filled with not a gain but a loss. Filled with loss, if you can imagine such a thing. You who have been unlucky to suffer not. Yes, I say unlucky, yes, I call you cursed for your wholeness, your innocence of these mortal woundings, of the soul’s agonies.

And you, I suppose, are blessed by this devastation?

Confounded and cast out by the privilege of cataclysmic injury yet I finger the beads and whisper the prayers and allow my eyes to roll back in their sockets from the sheer unknowingness of meaning, the definition of absolutes. Our mother, our father. All these soulful beings arting in their heavens. There is a consecration in catastrophe.

I disagree. You are martyring yourself to this.

Martyr? Laughing. This laying on of hands while the blade is hidden in the sleeve, dropped into the palm, the knife snicking out plunging into the heart between the ribs through the lungs a great sucking sound when its pulled back out. Taking life itself with it. The body heartbeating to death through the collapsing arteries.

All this because I wanted nothing more than to offer succor.

Are you familiar with the consolation prize, my friend?

Certainly, narrowly failing to win.

No, finishing last.

Yet recognized!

I don’t want to be recognized for my wounding. Your sympathy is of no value to me. Only to you. So, in an earnest effort to be brotherlike, to recognize that you too will one day bleed, I bite my tongue at refusing your solace. Give it here. In great bucketloads. Pour it out and over me. I’ll hold my breath to keep from drowning in your mollification. It offers some respite, admittedly, to others.

It’s that you can’t bear to be likened to others.

My goal to actually post on Monday this week is a success! And I don't have too much else to report, other than setting this week's goals, but there are a few things:

  • Exchanges due in May/June ([community profile] hurtcomfortex, [community profile] pickmeupexchange, [community profile] idproquo, [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles, [community profile] diegetic_exchange, [community profile] fandom5k + mystery pinch-hits and treats): Still at 12/12, but I edited the thing I needed to, so now this batch is just waiting for various reveals, assuming I don't pick up any super-late pinch hits. (I think there's only one that I even know the fandoms for at this point, though, so I may be safe?) [community profile] idproquo just revealed last night, but I haven't had a chance to read my fic yet. I'll report back on that next week, which is one of my weekly goals!

  • Exchanges due in July/August ([community profile] caseficexchange, [community profile] nonconex, [community profile] justmarriedexchange + future stuff): I'm still at 0/3. [community profile] justmarriedexchange assignments haven't come out yet, but should over the next couple of days. I'm very excited to see what I get, since there were a lot of really tasty requests. Does it count as gaming if you game for, like, 5 people all at once? 🤣 My goal this week is to get at least 2 more scenes written for my long-fic, and then to solidify my plan for at least one of the other two assignments.

  • Potentials for July/August: [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles for sure, but that's not up for a while. Currently watching nominations for [community profile] raremaleslashex & [community profile] littleblackdressex. You know, I would've sworn that I didn't currently have any LBD characters, but kudos to the person who nominated MCU Loki who is, indeed, a LBD and needs to get fucked by everyone, ASAP. I still doubt I'll be able to sign up for either of these, but pinch hits/treats are a definite possibility. Further out on my radar are [community profile] rarepairexchange & [community profile] iddyiddybangbang. Also, the big hubbub right now is around [community profile] battleshipex which I'm pretty sure I'm not doing. It sounds way too competitive and social for my tastes, but I'm sort of watching it just to see if maybe it's not as opposite my natural inclinations as my initial suspicions.

  • I've got another of my May/June reveals: For the Kill Your Double Flash Exchange, I grabbed a pinch hit for which I wrote One, Two, Infinity: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan/every single other incarnation of Zhao Yunlan (yes, literally) for Guardian - priest. As long as there continue to be horny prompts for these two, I will write them! 😝

  • Nothing to see on Femslash Salad Bar...

  • I never get a chance to watch anything over the weekend, so no updates on BNHA, but I'll be starting up again today!

  • I read tons of Noblesse this weekend! I think I have two arcs left? Rai's doing better now, thankfully. He's not allowed to die. Neither is Frankenstein. The two of them must be weird together forever. Is it wrong that I go 'ho-hum' through the battle scenes to get to the scenes where nothing is happening but characters drinking tea? I think not!

  • I realized that I haven't had a hard-copy book to read for a while, which is weird, but I really want to finish Noblesse before I pick something new up. My current inclination is Heaven Official's Blessing by MXTX, which I know nothing about other than that it's long and MXTX wrote it, which is pretty good recommendation for me!

  • Figure skating has been kicking my butt lately. I've been super busy at work, so I have very little brain, and I'm trying to learn a new footwork program and a new synchro program, while not forgetting my current freestyle program in the process. It does not help that my coach has completely changed my footwork program 3 times now. It's just not sticking! Oh well, eventually it has to, right?

  • Also, I finally signed up to [community profile] pinchhitbingo, just to see if I've got bingo. And...I think I do? I will talk more about this next week, once I've had time to analyze my board more carefully.

Goals for this week: 1) Get 2 more scenes written for long-fic. 2) Get my idea into shape for one of my other assignments. 3) Read/comment on [community profile] idproquo. 4) Watch more BNHA. 5) Read more Noblesse! (I want to say 'finish', but practically I don't think I have quite enough time to do that this week. Hopefully next week.)

Just Married Exchange 2025: Letter

Dear writer,

Thanks for creating for me - whether you are my assigned writer or creating a treat, I really appreciate it and can't wait to see what you've made!

General Preferences:

LIKES:

This varies a bit by fandom, so please see those specific sections (for instance, there are some specific fandoms/ships where I prefer darker stuff, and most stuff below is relatively fluffy/lighthearted) but here are some general ideas of what sort of fic I enjoy.

I love a lot of the fandom cliches, particularly Only One Bed, fake dating turned real, friends to lovers. Can never get enough of those.
I’m a big fan of reading about characters in a relationship growing as people together, discovering new sides to themselves, figuring out how to live or raise kids together, etc.
I like soulmate AUs a LOT so long as the characters still get some chance to develop feelings organically, whether or not they are already aware of their soulmate status. Stuff where they find out before they are in love and kind of fight it at first, but end up getting to know and falling for the person anyway — love it, can’t get enough.
Big into people falling in love with someone they'd never expect.
I really love outside character perspectives/reactions on a particularly unexpected relationship.
If you have characters from different cultures, countries, worlds, planets, etc. I really really love stuff that explores cultural differences in relationship norms (regardless of the nature of the specific relationship, I love this between friends, colleagues, etc. too as well as lovers) and where characters share their cultures with each other.
Some things I really like for smut fic: Oral sex, especially cunnilingus or rimming. Strap-ons. Motorboating, nipple play (no clamps though), boobs/chest focus. Marking, including/especially scent-marking but also stuff like leaving scars. Femdom in F/M.
Creative and weird uses of non-human biology in sex in sci-fi and fantasy scenarios.

GENERAL DNWs, no exceptions:

ABO/Omegaverse of any kind| Ace/aro/demisexual/demiromantic headcanons | Animal death/abuse/harm | Autistic or neurodivergent headcanons as main focus of the story | Bathroom kinks | Breathplay or other potentially life-threatening kink | Child sexual abuse, including in backstories (unless it is canonical. Note that a character having been abused as a child in some other way does not mean that "child sexual abuse" is canonical) | Daddy kink | Detailed violence/torture/gore | Explicit physical abuse | Extreme underage (i.e. younger than the age when teens typically start having consensual sex IRL) | Feederism or other weight-fetishization | Focus on feminine grooming rituals (such as doing each others' hair/makeup) in F/F | Genital mutilation (such as sounding) | Issuefic. Feel free to give your characters strong opinions and explore fraught issues, but the key word there is explore; I don't want to feel like I'm being lectured to or taught a lesson | Jewish or Muslim characters with uncircumcised penises | Loss of intelligence/Flowers for Algernon plots | Making canonically LGBTQ+ characters cis/straight | Men domming women | Mpreg-specific: butt babies, surprise uteruses, or other stuff that's implausible to whatever fictional universe you're in | Negative/stigmatizing discussion of abortion | Pre-relationship/UST that never resolves in romance/ship fic | Pregnancy in a female character (unless in the background) | Rape/non-con | Sexual orientation headcanons that "contradict" their romantic and sexual relationships or "if it's you, it's okay" | “Soulmate AUs” where the main couple are not actually soulmates | Using feminizing terms for male characters | Women giving up their ambitions/careers/dreams for a relationship treated as romantic/desirable/ideal, especially in F/M

GENERAL DNWs, with specific exceptions for specific fandoms/characters:

Amnesia/memory loss (okay with this for Utena, as long as the memories come back by the end) | AUs that change the setting or central relationship significantly* (exception: a less-bigoted version of the canon is fine for historical fiction or historically-inspired fantasy like FE3H, but not modern AUs or otherwise moving them into a fundamentally different setting/time period. except with Faisal/Lawrence I'm fine with modern AUs!) | Lifestyle BDSM (okay with and in fact big into this with Faisal/Lawrence, so long as Faisal is the dom) | PIV in smut (this is not really my personal preference ever, but I'm fine with it in requested het ships unless otherwise noted, and taking my other smut preferences into account) | Trans/non-binary headcanons for focus characters (specifically headcanons, does not apply to canonically trans/non-binary characters) (exception: fine with it in any fandoms where it isn't prohibited in the signup, provided it isn't used to make same-gender combos F/M or to add in more PIV)

*Setting changes means like significant shifts in place/time or worldbuilding, like a sci-fi AU for a realistic fiction work, or moving a historical or futuristic work to the present day. It does not mean plot-divergence, or smaller worldbuilding changes (e.g. a soulmate AU) in an otherwise similar universe. You can use your best judgment on where to draw the line, obviously. "Central relationship" changes are stuff like changing people's ages, genders/sexes, species, etc. or "reversing" in-canon character dynamics (like giving characters each other's jobs or social roles).

Usually DNW, with broader exceptions for certain fandoms or ships, please look at the specific fandom:

Abusive relationships between requested characters/pairings/that are non-canonical | Big power differentials between members of the main couple in ship fic | Cheating on main couple in ship fic | Major Character Death | Whump/dark fic (as stated in some of the fandom sections, I'm never really a fan of full-on "Hurt No Comfort," but I'm cool with and even prefer darker themes for some fandoms)

Additional caveats:

Consent: Characters do not have to give explicit verbal consent to be considered "consenting." Characters being drunk/high/stoned is fine as long as they're both clearly into it, and as long as they're not clearly way past the point where they could say no IRL (just use your best judgment here, I'm just really tired of fics where one beer is treated like a "dubcon" situation).

Dubcon: I do not want any outright non-con/rape, but I am fine with some degree of dubcon as long as it's a situation where the person would be interested in that other person if they were clear-headed (or whatever the case may be), where it's more of a catalyst to acting on real feelings, and also where whomever is not "dubconned" isn't intentionally taking advantage of the other party. I prefer mutual dubcon, and I especially enjoy the classic tropes like "sex pollen," pon-farr/fuck-or-die stuff with sci-fi and fantasy races, etc.

Historical accuracy: I'm someone who has a strong interest in history, including in the periods for historical fiction works here. I don't expect exacting historical accuracy, but please don't get basic and broad things wrong: some examples would be which countries existed, having people use overly modern slang, etc. My one caveat is anything involving music, as that is my own area of academic expertise. If you're going to incorporate something involving music history or music trivia please make sure you really and truly know it (as in, are not just relying on something you saw online or you remember your high school band teacher telling you) because it will truly take me out of the fic if people get things wrong there! Characters talking about music, playing it, going to concerts, etc. is fine, but if they are going to make a fact claim about it, fact-check it if it's intended to be accurate (obviously, if you intend the character to be wrong or unsure, that's fine). (For the purposes of this exchange, this section applies most to A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia and The Gilded Age. FE3H is set in its own medieval fantasy world that I don’t expect to be overly similar to the historical Middle Ages any more than the original game is, so go to town.)

Fandom-Specific Preferences:

So I requested most of these for previous exchanges, and my preferences are pretty similar this time around! Here are the letters for those. Just keep in mind the marriage nature of this particular exchange when looking at these ideas/prompts:
  • Star Trek DS9: Star Trek Holidays 2023
  • Fire Emblem: Three Houses: Purim Gifts 2024 for F/F ships, Just Married 2023 for all ships
  • Revolutionary Girl Utena: Yuletide 2023
  • A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia: Yuletide 2023
  • The Gilded Age: This is my first time requesting this fandom! Go based on what my sign-up says, and know that my preferences are fairly similar to other period/historical fandoms other than that I'm not really into the AUs here. I want it set in the time period and setting of the show, and preferably fairly close to "canon." Caveat is that as of this writing, I don't yet know what season 3 has in store, so "close to canon" in the sense of "where the show is at at the end of season 2." But feel free to draw on the events of season 3 if you want! I'm sure I'll still love it so long as it still adheres to my DNWs from the sign-up. (And don't worry about spoilers: I'm a spoilerphile, and I'll also be watching this season week by week as it airs in the U.S.)

My general preferences are here.

DNW: unrequested mundane AU | female characters in fridges | non-con | violent dub-con | graphic violence | gore | graphic sexual violence | cruelty/death to animals | cruelty/death to children | requested character death | unrelieved grimdark | bigotry by the good guys | first or second POV | reader fic | ABO | soulbonds | wildly OOC in a non-cracky way

SMUT DNW: creampies | the word “cunt” | anal | hate each other out of bed | underage | incest

MAYBE: no-harm dubcon (sex pollen or “fertility artifact”) | period typical attitudes | infidelity | power dynamic

Shower the treats like rice!

I love weddings.  You cannot be too fluffy or have too many details, or get into too-ridiculous or too-complicated situations.  You want to go way over the top, I am your girl.

These are a few of my very favorite tags:

Wedding Reception - Unmarried Couple Fantasize About Their Future While At Friend's Wedding  - YES  I love it!  The whole, that could be us factor!  Also here for frank discussions of we are not having X at our wedding sort of stuff

Wedding Reception - Catching the Bouquet – Yes it’s old-fashioned and silly and I love it.  I especially love conspiracies to make sure someone specific gets it.

Wedding Ceremony - The Wedding Day Disaster You Laugh About in the Future  - So my first husband had to bribe a friend to overnight the ring because he left it on the kitchen counter (LDR).  It seemed huge at the time.  I’m open to ideas as long as they can still get married and aren’t too unhappy!

Proposal - While Watching Happy Friends Get Married – YES, although here maybe looking for that moment of I should ask, because it’s rude to propose at someone else’s wedding.  Or a private proposal that doesn’t detract.

Wedding - Something Old New Borrowed and Blue – I love this.  I could read a thousand variations on it, because what I love is seeing what’s important to the characters.

Wedding - That One Perfect Photograph at Your Wedding – That one moment you remember forever.

Anniversary - 1st Year – I love this opportunity to look forward and look back and be in love!

Wedding - Family Heirlooms Passed Down For Wedding – This can be tied to old/borrowed/new/blue but I love that little connection to the past or a loved one you miss.

Dimension Travel - Getting Together After Meeting The AU Married Couple Version of Themselves – I love the meeting AND the realization and the getting together.

Wedding Reception - Best Man and Maid of Honor Get Together – It’s a classic, especially if the bride and groom are trying to throw them together.

Bachelor(ette) Party – Hijinks & Shenanigans – Also a classic, as long as the hijinks do not involve infidelity.

He’d been sick for a week. Summer cold they called it when he was a boy, but he didn’t think it was hay fever. What would he have been allergic to? Mold and dust? They’d mucked out the barn late, a mid-spring chore but time had wandered away from them and it was nearer to summer. The horses had already been turned out into the lower forty, hock deep in an abundance of growth and greenery, noses hidden in carpets of bluebells.

The barn took the both of them two days and just after that he’d fallen ill. Sick as the proverbial dog. Racking coughs, lungs that sounded like cedar being kindled. She was fine as houses, and they hadn’t been to town nor had a customer up from town for the mill. But he couldn’t breathe. Literally, figuratively, the physicality of inhalation and exhalation becoming an emotional toil. His lungs didn’t hurt; they were just not working the way they’d worked for the entirety of his life. She’d teased him good and hard about it. He was two decades her senior and he allowed the ribbing, deciding it was a good-natured lambast, but alone thought slantways about the distance measured by an ageing body and knew at sixty-eight he was old and at forty-seven she was not. Or not near as.

But he didn’t couldn’t spell out in words the extent of what he was experiencing. Later realizing not telling her was fear borne from a deep childlike belief that he could possibly jinx the very ability of his body to keep him bodied, ensouled. He tamped down his symptoms, dismissed the idea of going into the clinic. Waved away even a hint of diagnostic concern.

Naming a thing doesn’t always give the namer power. Some things acquire a name, and the power becomes all theirs, monstrous, overbearing, overarching, made real and whole.

The first sense of hardening, something lodged, something stiff inside his chest had woken him out of an already bad sleep and came at him with an existential dread so fathomless that he knew in those darkly pre-dawn hours that God had reached inside his body and touched the unseen organs toiling in their mysterious viscera at keeping him earthside. He knew he had been beckoned, felt that finger quirk within the twinned grey lobes, filters of the very air itself. A whisper come home son.

But he didn’t. Heed the call, respond. In another aeon without medical choices he would have acquiesced, quickly bent a knee to such a godly mandate, and within the year dutifully laid his stoved-up body down and not gotten himself back up again. He was astonished at how his corporeal self, pavlovian began to slaver at the command of fate.

It was hard work, to flee, to turn away from the lure of the abyss, the echo coming back emptied of his pleas, hauling great mouthfuls of air into his hardened lungs, willing them to soften beneath his will, to generate as though it were an act he understood or had any sort of control over oxygenated blood. His mind committed to a marathon, but he learned the body does not work that way.

Acquiescence. An exam, then labs, then quiet pronouncements from white coated analyzers.

ILD. Interstitial Lung Disease. There came the naming, the christening he’d gone to such extremes avoiding. He did not feel empowered. Identification did not lead to compartmentalization. The panic of it made it more difficult to breathe.

Accusations or recriminations were never part of the conversation in the sterile examination rooms. Neither courtroom nor pulpit. Regrets only his. All their probing and prodding, questions and answers.

But. Had he done this to himself?

Cemented his own lungs? The bronchus, bronchioles solidified inside the yeasty lobes. The deflated sacs, gummed closed. He wasn’t a smoker, leaf or grass. No childhood asthma, no rheumatoid arthritis. His heart was steady, his arteries clear. Occupational dust or fibers.

Years at the sawmill, whittling a figure of a man close to earth, organic and respectful of the mighty conifers, the broad-leafed hardwoods. Riven down to the heartwood, the splitting and the milling. The board feet of his daily grind, the blades, the growing mounds of sawdust, the smells and soils of a hard day’s work. The labor of the felling and the bucking, the chain dragging, and the ripping. The packaging, boards and stickers, and the redolent incense. The perfume of his own wood lot, his own lumber yard. It lined the inside of his sinuses, and he relished it. Tasted it on his tongue, scraped it out between his molars.

Fibrosis, necrosis, pyrosis.

One year. Into the second wearing oxygen but his strength was sapped. His vision swimmy, his ears ringing with the labors of his breathing.

Double lung transplant.

Now that was a thing to give a body the shakes. He quivered like a strung bow as charts and diagrams were shown, then the contractual agreement and he wanted to make a dark joke but could read the room. These men did not see themselves on a side other than that of a clinical, mathematical God. This for that. One life for another. Interchangeable beneath the skin that pretends a difference between one or the other. All scientific progress and supposed presupposed human gain. He signed and jested silently, inside his head about blood and souls bartered for a bit more of this and a lot more of that.

The waiting and the worsening. The dizziness brought on both by his body and his thoughts.

The loneliness ached him more than the faltered breath, the straining ribcage, the sinking realization, the bartered understanding. She tried to comfort or strengthen him up by relating the stories of her two births. It’s like birth, she said. It’s entering a room in which there is only one exit. He could not grasp the concept. For him the room was not a room, but a box fitted to the width and breadth of his shoulders, the length of his skeleton head to toe.

After after afterwards. Sitting wrapped in a blanket he’d pilfered from the months’ long stay at rehab on a rocker on the deck he had built when a younger man a different man a man breathing through his own lungs staring out across the land he owned had bought for her wanting not just one thing but all the things for her for her for them such a short allowance we are given he measured the length of a thing against the weight of a thing and wondered. And could simply not decide.

I can't think of a witty opener. So instead I'll go with: "I mowed the lawn, wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" Also, I managed to bang my knee skating on Sunday, which is annoying and preventing me from doing knee slides - I can still jump, though, which is a relief. I am very late in posting for this week, but I have a good reason! Behold, below...

Here is where I stand:
  • Exchanges due in May/June ([community profile] hurtcomfortex, [community profile] pickmeupexchange, [community profile] idproquo, [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles, [community profile] diegetic_exchange, [community profile] fandom5k + mystery pinch-hits and treats): 12/12: I picked up and finished one new thing, and my long-fic ended up being a monster - almost twice as long as I guesstimated - but I know have a draft done and just have to fine-tune it. That is my only goal this 'week' (heh, assuming that I post next week Monday as I should, then that's barely any time at all). I will edit up my monster, and then other posted fics that are revealing soon. My guess is that this will be the end of things I write for May/June, unless I grab anymore shiny pinch-hits with near deadlines (beyond, y'know, the one that I already did 😝).

  • Exchanges due in July/August ([community profile] caseficexchange, [community profile] nonconex, [community profile] justmarriedexchange + future stuff): A new category! I'm currently at 0/3, unsurprisingly. I've moved Case Fic over since this is when the fic is actually due. Assignments for Noncon Ex just came out Monday. I offered a wide variety of things for that and was kind of surprised by what I got, but it's one of the things I was excited to nominate, so I have many thoughts about it, which I'll start noodling on next week. Also, I've signed up for Just Married, because there were a bajillion things nominated/requested that interested me, although of course I haven't started because I don't even have my assignment yet.

  • Potentials for July/August: I will also definitely do [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles again when that comes up. I'm still TBD on [community profile] raremaleslashex, [community profile] littleblackdressex, [community profile] rarepairexchange, and [community profile] iddyiddybangbang.

  • [community profile] diegetic_exchange has revealed, and is in the anon period! I got three fantastic gifts for this. I love seeing how much fun and creativity people had with all the prompts. 😊

    • #DaryanCrescendIsOverParty for Ace Attorney - A delightful social media feed of Gavinners fans freaking out about Daryan's arrest for murder. Lots of fun trolling and internet personalities in this one!

    • Why Not Both? also for Ace Attorney - A lawyer RPF fan squeeing online about Phoenix/Edgeworth and how there are definite indications that a mutual proposal is ensuing. Very cute, seriously read it!

    • The Great Program Debate for Yuri on Ice!!! - The Reddit thread of figure-skating fans grading this year's programs. Just delightful all around!

  • Some stuff I've written has also been deanoned, so I can post about it now. These were all pinch hits I picked up, because they sounded neat:

    • In the Light: Margot/Mark from Dial M for Murder (yes, the old Hitchcock movie!) written for [community profile] fluffityfluffexchange. I'd seen this movie already about half a dozen times before, so was intrigued when this popped up, did a rewatch and read of the prompts, and knew I wanted to go for it. I liked the contrast of all the horrible things Margot had to endure in her previous marriage, compared to her post-traumatized reactions to being in an actual healthy, loving relationship. This was such a intimidating fandom to write because the plot of the movie is so good, but I'm glad I had a chance to play in that world. This is why more people should request old movies! I would never have thought to write for this otherwise.

    • Forged in Pain: The War Master from Doctor Who BFA written for [community profile] whumpex. I saw this request during sign-ups and was very tempted by it, but didn't end up signing up because I didn't know exactly what I wanted to request and was super busy at the time anyway. But I was delighted to see it come up as a PH! I think I saw the PH and then the night after I dreamed up the whole plot, and then I wrote the whole thing in one go the morning after. It was one of those 'the fic writes itself' things, and I do so love writing in the War Master's voice. He'd so incredibly fucked up and twisted.

    • A Taste of Blood: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan from Guardian - priest also written for [community profile] whumpex. As anyone who's been reading this DW (which is no one, lol) will know, I've just finished reading these webnovels, and seeing all this requester's prompts is what got me started on that in the first place. So I was very excited to finally be able to grab one of their PHs and try to do it justice! And I just have to say: Zhao Yunlan is SO MUCH fun to write! Seriously: so, so much fun.

  • Nothing for Femslash Salad Bar, although I did have a niggling for that Bedelia/Miriam fic I want to write for this. Not sure I'll have the time, though.

  • I'm back at BNHA and more than halfway through S2 now! Finally finished the tournament arc (tournaments are not my favorite thing, TBH) and am into the internships. However, my favorite thing in the entire series up until this point is now Bakugo trying to come up with his hero name! How many horrible mash-ups of 'explosion' and 'murder' can he come up with? Let's find out! 🤣

  • I'm still really enjoying Noblesse! It has gotten quite a bit more battle-y, which is not my favorite, but I do appreciate that Rai (and to a lesser degree, Frankenstein) can pretty much just say "nope!" and end that shit in a heartbeat. I am very anxious about Rai's well-being, and am beginning to develop a sneaking suspicion that this manhwa will not turn out happily for him. 😢 Very anxious to read where this is all going.

Goals for this (pseudo-)week: 1) Quick final editing pass on fics that are going live this weekend. 2) Hard edit on my monster, to whip it into shape. 3) Actually post on Monday next week. 🤣
