The Wild Hunt

On this day in 1948, songwriter Stan Jones released Ghost Riders in the Sky, which tells a version of the Wild Hunt legend.

As the riders loped on by him

He heard one call his name

‘If you wanna save your soul

From hell a-riding on our range

Then, cowboy, change your ways today

Or with us you will ride

Trying to catch the devil’s herd

Across these endless skies

A mighty hunter and a pack of dogs, horses, or other beasts racing across the horizon, making a terrible noise as they rush above you! What could it mean? Well, that depends on who you are.

Let’s say you might be an average citizen in a time of political upheaval and great anxiety about the future (seems rather timely). For you, the appearance of the Wild Hunt may not be so helpful. In some traditions, the Wild Hunt is a bad omen— not just for those who see it, but for the entire society they represent. That’s right, those huntsmen chasing howling wolves across the sky means you’re going to have a war! Except! If the guy leading the hunt happens to be King Arthur or some other long-dead hero. Then you may be relieved, as the day is about to be saved, supernatural-superhero-style.

Check out my Weird Wednesday blog post on the Wild Hunt for the whole story and some writing prompts, such as:

King Arthur returns. This is some Angels of Mons type stuff, where visions in the heavens presage victory for one side or the other. But what if your character finds they recognize Wild Hunt Arthur as somebody they know? A grandparent, neighbor, or lover? Maybe someone could get abducted into the Wild Hunt only to realize they themselves are the supernatural hero.

[community profile] justmarried exchange is currently in the nomination phase, and I have been having trouble because they allow you to sign up with ten fandoms but you only can nominate seven. And my favorite marriage trope is the sedoretu, which is a specific type of poly marriage invented by Ursula K. LeGuin, and requires four people. Which means that I need to have foursomes nominated! (Although I can just go with a pairing and say "I love sedoretus, if you want to write this pairing as a sedoretu you can choose who to have be the other pair in the sedoretu.")

Anyway, the reason I have not nominated is that I am waiting to see what else got nominated to help me whittle down what I want to nominate, and I just checked the nominations and I think that [personal profile] tielan has nominated! (Thank you!) Because the BSG foursome I was going to nominate (Lee/Kara/Sam/Dee) has been nominated, and so has the Steve/Maria/Bucky/Natasha foursome in MCU fandom, and both are foursomes I have written as sedoretus for [personal profile] tielan before. Which means that not only is there someone interested in the same characters, there's someone who's probably going to sign up who is interested in sedoretus, specifically. That is really exciting to me! And it does free up some nomination slots.

Here are some nominations I am planning:

TGE: Maia/Csethiro/Csevet/Vedero (there are a bunch of TGE ships already nominated but they are all suuuuuuuper rare)

DS9: Sisko ships, Worf/Jadzia, Miles/Keiko/Kira/Bashir

TOS: Spock/Uhura and some foursomes (although someone on the Yuletide discord may be nominating sedoretus in this fandom, which would mean I don't have to nominate them and could free up a slot)

B5: John/Delenn, John/Delenn/Lennier, Delenn/Neroon, John/Delenn/Lennier/? (I don't know who I'd put with those three to complete the sedoretu--Anna, maybe? a Minbari OC?)

Peter Wimsey, sedoretu with Parker and Mary? Or Bunter? (Although I can't think of who would be the fourth in a sedoretu with Bunter, so I may just leave that as a poly threesome.

Rivers of London--I think just Peter/Beverly here, because I can't think of any sedoretus and ever since we learned that Nightingale was ace (in the novella Masquerades of Spring) that has completely killed any desire to ship him, for me. RoL is the only one on the list that's iffy, because much as I love it I'm not sure how much I'm into RoL + marriage tropes.

That's six, and with BSG taken care of I can look at some of my other fandoms for the seventh slot. Here are some options:

SW Legends, Han/Leia/Luke/Mara, Han/Leia/Lando, Lando/Luke/Mara. Han/Leia/Lando most properly belongs in SW OT, but that would mean using a second Star Wars nomination slot.

TNG: nobody's nominated this yet, and I can't think of any sedoretus, but I would probably do something like Picard/Guinan (my TNG rare pair OTP), Picard/Ro, Riker/Ro, Troi/Worf, and Data/Geordi

Random Harvest. Look, this movie is just so tropey and melodramatic it would be amazing to pile even more tropes into it.

Here I go, whee!

Jun. 2nd, 2025 07:44 am

[personal profile] kantayra
Look at me, posting before the weekly tide of Shit I Have To Do(TM) kicks in! I am so proactive. Here we go with my weekly stuff, which continues to go quite well, and I met all my goals for last week (and exceeded them) despite making them quite late in the week:

  • Exchanges due in May/June ([community profile] hurtcomfortex, [community profile] pickmeupexchange, [community profile] idproquo, [community profile] caseficexchange, [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles, [community profile] diegetic_exchange, [community profile] fandom5k + mystery pinch-hits and treats): As mentioned last week, I finally have time to pick up Pinch Hits and treats, which I have been doing. I had a nice little spurt of productivity Thursday/Friday and got a good amount of stuff written. Right now, I've completed 9/11 fics, and the 2 remaining are the 2 long fics that I've been plugging away on. I did make progress on both of these, too! I've completed 1.5 scenes in each, and both of them will at least be 5 scenes total when done. There are 2 new (short) fics I'd like to pick up and finish this week (due to exchange deadlines) to get to 11/13, and then I'd like to make more progress on the 2 WIPs. The goal for those is to be through Scene 4 in the first (which is as far as I have a clear outline - I have a line that says '??? Profit!' in the middle of my outline right now, and then the final scene 🤣) and then through Scene 3 of the other one (which does have a complete outline, and so I don't feel as much need to press on it). I also have a couple things that will probably (unless there are reveals delays) need editing this week, so I need to get that done too.

  • Upcoming exchanges: I need to sign up for [community profile] narumitsuday this week. Also, I've already put in my nominations for [community profile] justmarriedexchange and [community profile] nonconex, at least the first of which I'm hoping to sign up for. I will keep an eye on [community profile] rarepairexchange, although I'm not sure I'll be able to swing that one.

  • Femslash Salad Bar - Still nothing new, moving on...

  • No more progress on My Hero Academia since last post, since I don't get time to watch things on the weekend. I'll watch some more this week, though, no doubt.

  • I now have all 3 volumes of Guardian by priest! I've finished the 2nd volume and am 2 chapters into the 3rd (which is the final arc). I will say that I found the first 2 arcs better than the 3rd, which didn't seem to have as tight writing and meandered a bit. Also, I enjoyed Zhao Yunlan not knowing Shen Wei was the Soul-Executing Emissary more than their relationship post-reveal: Zhao Yunlan's persistent horniness now is interspersed by moments of doubt, plus they've gone domestic but without the profound levels of fucking needed? Ah well, I'm still enjoying it, just the first 2 arcs are my favorites so far, for sure. I'm hoping to finish this week!

Goals for this week: 1) Pick up 2 PHs/treats for things due this week and complete them. 2) Make progress on my 2 WIP long fics: 1 through Scene 4, and the other through Scene 3. 3) Complete any editing needed for reveals this week. 4) Sign up for [community profile] narumitsuday. 5) Finish Guardian.

May Stats: I'm now at 128k for the year, posted, which is not bad. With the WIPs I have, I'm definitely over 130k unofficially. At the rate I'm going, I might actually made 200k this year, maybe? I have been tracking at over 10k/month, so that should work out, although I suspect I'll be slower in the summer. We'll see!

The women of Andor - Bix

[personal profile] nic
I'll start off being honest: I did not relate to Bix. She's a great character and a complicated woman, but she wasn't my favourite.

That said, there is such awesome writing on this show because this was a different character yet again. An ordinary person who never signed up for the Rebellion, but got dragged into it because of who she knew. Tortured because of an ex. And then wanted to fight back.

(A lot of this discussion is about my preference for the Jyn/Cassian 'ship.)

The women of Andor - Dedra

[personal profile] nic
For an Imperial, Dedra is surprisingly popular in STAR WARS fandom. It's because she (and other Imps) were written as people first, with their own compelling motivations and plot lines. "Andor" truly showed how everyday people can be accessories to fascists even when they don't think they are. They think they're doing the right thing and by the time they realise they are oppressing others (do they ever realise?) they're so far in that this seems normal.

Where Dedra stood out is that she is the only woman we've seen with this rank, or level of power. High-ranking women in the Empire are few and far between.

An exciting and busy month, looking back! Although with less to show for it than I'd like

Fics:
you shall drip rubies, precious rubies - Bellatrix/Rodolphus, rated M

Crafting::
I finished the blanket! I need to make a post dedicated to it with the few progress pictures I have. It was actually quite easy to put together in the end after all the putting off I did.
I’ve managed to get myself two new blanket projects, though, one (crocheted) for my best friends baby due in October, and another for my other cousin, who has sensory issues and thought she wouldn’t appreciate a yarn blanket, but she’s tested her sister’s and now she’d like one for her birthday in September

Read:
The Folk Tales of Scotland

Other::
I got a job! I had my interview at the start of the month and the last three weeks have been full of paperwork and training and prep. My DBS certificate came through this morning which is the final stage - they just need to verify it and I can start working. It’s part time, and client based, so it won’t be super regular, but because of the nature of it (I don’t know why I’m being vague, but I am), I can also find private clients and supplement my working hours that way.

Unplanned hiatus

I just realized that I haven't looked at Dreamwidth in I have no idea how long. At least a week, probably. I wasn't especially busy; I did take a few days with my family for Memorial Day weekend mini-vacation (which we have done every year since before I was born), but judging by how far I've gone back in my reading list and haven't started seeing posts I recognize, I had stopped well before that.

Normally, checking DW is part of my daily routine. My flist isn't hugely active, so there's no need to check more than once a day, but it's the only place that I can reliably check in with several long-term friends, and of course a lot of exchanges are mostly run through DW and it makes it easier to keep up with what's planned and what's in progress. I missed the signups for Fandom 5k, and none of the pinch hits are things I'd want to write, which is a shame, because I prefer the longer exchanges. Ah, well, I guess that means I will have more time for shorter-minimum thematic exchanges instead.

If you posted something important and I missed it ... sorry! Feel free to let me know in the comments!

The holiday weekend was far too frenetic for my tastes -- medical incident with both my mom and dad :/ -- plus I also managed to injure my eye while gardening, although thankfully not too bad: just a nasty scrape from a branch. So, not as relaxing as I'd hoped, although I did at least get enough sleep that my brain no longer feels like it's about to explode from too much information from work. Spring allergy season is also coming to an end, which I suspect is the cause of my increasing amounts of energy.

Without further ado:
  • Exchanges due in May/June ([community profile] hurtcomfortex, [community profile] pickmeupexchange, [community profile] idproquo, [community profile] caseficexchange, [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles, [community profile] diegetic_exchange, [community profile] fandom5k + mystery pinch-hits and treats): I'm now at 6/9 (I've picked some things up!) and I got through everything with the most pressing deadlines, woo-hoo! I have at least a start on the remaining 3, and I want to get at least one of those done before next week (so, like, tonight lol) and make some continued progress on the other two, which will both be longer fics. And also I have some spare time to grab pinch hits and write treats? What's up with that? :P (It does make me sad, though, that [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles is over because if that were in creation period right now, I'd write a million treats for it. Oh well, I'm sure at some point it will align with my schedule!)

  • The last of March/April has revealed as has the aforementioned [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles. Here's what I wrote:
    • Letter 126, from ‘The Complete Writings of Edwin Courcey, Volume 6: The Early Letters’, 7th Revised Edition on the 50th Anniversary of Its Original Publication for [community profile] unsent_letters_exchange, Robin Blyth/Edwin Courcey for The Last Binding Series by Freya Marske: This was my main assignment and SO MUCH FUN! I started off with the "I can't wait to be home" innuendo and then built the whole thing backwards around that. I knew pretty early on that I wanted super srs academic commentary on Edwin's blatant bottoming joke, and spent a whole bunch of time cribbing formatting from various books of published historical letters (all ancient Egyptian since that is every non-fiction book I own, lol) and got the format for 'academic preface' + 'letter content' pretty quickly. I started introducing the footnotes incidentally at first, since that matched the academic style, but I had zero clue what I was doing or even whether I would keep them until I thought up the 'One Pill Makes You Small' insult, and then I knew I HAD to keep them! And I had a fun time building up all the petty academic rivalries in the citations, too. (100% based on real-life academic pettiness. SO MUCH PETTINESS! 🤣) I also figured out early on that the footnotes helped break up the exposition, plus let me fill in the fates of other characters: I got to make Maudie a professor! ❤️ Anyway, I loved these books when I first read them (especially the first book and especially Robin/Edwin) but I'd never had any direction on fic-writing for them, so I was so excited when I got this assignment! I loved revisiting them!

    • Now and Forever also for [community profile] unsent_letters_exchange, Nell/Theo(-ish) for 'The Haunting of Hill House' by Shirley Jackson. I'd read this book back in February off of a recommendation for 'cool haunted-house stuff' and knew I wanted to do something for it, so I offered it for this exchange and then snatched it right up when I saw this come up for pinch hit! I knew I wanted to try my hand at creepy psychological horror, and I loved the letters+journal format for revealing that. This is one of those fics that pretty much wrote themselves (as spookily appropriate as that is in this case :P), and I really liked the way it turned out.

    • Dearest Beloved for [community profile] unsent_letters_exchange, Hannibal/Will. This was the second pinch hit I picked up and one I was afraid I wasn't going to have time to get to, but I did! I think there were several weeks where I was hoping every day that no one would pick this up before I knew whether I could commit to it. I really loved the prompt of Hannibal leaving Will guiding letters at crime scenes, but it is super intimidating trying to write letters in Hannibal's, er...unique voice. Once I solidified the frame story around the letters, though, it all started to flow together, and I really enjoyed getting to write Will with a very dark POV (and yet also strangely murderously sappy). They are both such horrible people, and I love them together so much!

    • Until Proven Guilty for [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles, Columbo & Dog. My assignment and the one drabble I wrote for this round! I'd written Columbo previously in my Columbo & Garak fic a while back and I do love writing Columbo, but I would have a hard time coming up with a whole case fic, so I was delighted to offer this for a short-minimum exchange. And, in a way, I sort of did come up with a whole case fic, although Dog - alas - is not the cleverest of villains! (He is, however, the only one Columbo would let off the hook. :P)

  • Upcoming exchanges: I am eying [community profile] narumitsuday aggressively since it is physically impossible for that one not to have any recipients I could write for. :P I'm also keeping a hopeful eye on [community profile] justmarriedexchange and a tentative one on [community profile] nonconex: for the latter I don't think I could swing a whole sign-up, but I'll be checking for interesting PHs/requests to treat. I also don't think I have enough rare pairs for [community profile] rarepairexchange (I have eclectic fandom tastes, but my pairings within those fandoms tend to be bog-standard) but that's another possibly for PHs/treats. Honestly though, I suspect most of the rest of my May/June docket will be taken up grabbing PHs from exchanges currently running. I went through the list the other day, and there were, like, 20 that appealed to me, so...yeah.

  • Femslash Salad Bar - Nope, nothing to see here! I'm going to leave it on my list, but I suspect I'll do amnesty/make-up for next February to finally finish this one off.

  • My Hero Academia has improved, although I still wouldn't say I'm a fan/fannish about it. I'm a few episodes into S2 now, and at least the story has gotten more compelling, if not yet the characters. It's now moved up in my esteem to "solid evening TV-watching entertainment" though, and there's nothing else I'm watching, so I am happy with that. Good grief, though, it's been a long time since I watched an anime and the fan-service is so dreadful! Like, there's a character who dresses and acts like a baby and his whole thing is that he cops feels on all the female characters' boobs (which, of course, are huge overflowing water-balloon style in skimpy outfits). And, like...ugh. Why did anyone need to include this? It's not funny, it's not hot, it's stupid and juvenile and alienating. But, y'know...fan-service! 🙄

  • I finished The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison! And I loved it! It's such a compelling but kind-hearted book, and I love that shit, and I love Maia and also so many of the side characters. I'm going to buy a hard copy of this one, because I need to reread it many times. I know the author has a 3-novella side series set in the same universe, and I've put those in my queue, but it'll be a while before they come in. Really just lovely, though, a real treat!

  • I'm through the first volume of Guardian by priest and possibly the 2nd and 3rd volumes are ready for me to pick up at the library? (I honestly cannot tell: the library site is having fun issues today. First log-in wasn't working at all, then I got email spam that books I'd already returned were ready for pick-up, then I finally could log in but the only page that would load was the 'in-transit' holds page, and...yeah. I will pop by in person tomorrow to see WTF is actually on my holds shelf. 😝) The first volume was tons of fun, though, and we got the reveal that Shen Wei is the Soul-Executing Emissary (which was pretty obvious from the moment we first met the Soul-Executing Emissary). But the sheer level of horniness between him and Zhao Yunlan is fantastic, and they've obviously known each other for hundreds of years although Zhao Yunlan can't remember it, so looking forward to seeing where that's going, and just the MOTWs are really solid too. Fun series!

  • I got my schedule for my next big figure-skating competition in July, and it's pretty good! I'll only have to miss a little bit of work. My coach is putting together a new footwork program for me for this, so lots of learning there. I bought some new kneepads because my old ones are worn out, and we've been playing with different knee slides for the new program, and after 10 knee slides in one practice, I'm inevitably going to come down a little too hard at least once and then have unsightly bruises for the next week. 🤣 Knee slides are super fun, though! And once I've narrowed down which one I'm doing, I'll have time to practice that to the point where I don't need pads anymore. (I may still wear them, though, just to be safe, because the footwork competition is before the free-skate competition, and I do NOT want to run my free-skate program with bruised knees, ouch!)

  • I have vaguely nebulous thoughts about doing a thing where I watch a different, random old movie each week, and write a short response fic to each one. Inspired by the fact that there were a couple of neat prompts for old movies in [community profile] yuletide/ [community profile] ficinabox/ [personal profile] candyheartsex where I went "huh, never thought of writing for THAT before!" and then I really enjoyed it. So that got me thinking that it might be fun to rewatch my old faves with a specific eye toward trying to get a fic/ficlet/drabble out it. Of course, this would be something I'd have to make time for on my own, which I'm not quite ready for yet, but I'm noodling on it. I think it would make a nifty community/prompt challenge but, alas, I have zero readers so I'm not the best person to run it. Still thinking, though.

Goals for this week: Finish 1 May/June assignment. Make some progress on the 2 remaining long-fics. Pick up at least 1 more PH.

Dedicating myself to writing more fiction over the summer is something that I have tried to do for the last 18 summers. I've always had other things going on that pulled my focus from the story that I wanted to tell at that time. Part-time jobs, work commitments, or professional development for my CV. This summer has been totally cleared because those previous summers were not restful or productive enough for me to feel like it was worth missing out on my personal life. The projects I haven't finished or started to work on follow me around like little ghosts. I have felt stressed and sad about that. Then, a writer I admire talked about how difficult it was for them to be teaching full-time and writing full time. Even after 20 years, they could not do both at 100%. Hearing this really made me feel a lot better about literally everything. I have so many unconscious expectations of myself that are totally ridiculous. They don't help me be more creative or joyful. Instead, they hold me back. And then I get upset at myself. An ouroboros of misery and shame.
