I am clearly a Original Trilogy/Legends girlie, so you know what to do!

My Star Wars preferences:

So, I'm a Star Wars fan who's a little sad that the Extended Universe got handwaved away - I really loved Timothy Zahn and Michael Stackpole, and my requests tend to reflect that. I am a Legends girl at heart, and you can’t go wrong if you write me something that belongs in either a Timothy Zahn book or one of Stackpole’s Rogue Squadron books. Please don't refer to anything that happened after the godawful Vector Prime and switch to Del Rey. No Yuuzhan Vong, no Mara Jade gets weird wasting disease, no Teneniel getting put in the freezer.

I'm also not a very active Star Wars fan. I’m not into the games, am not reading the new EU stuff, so don’t write anything that requires a lot of homework to GET.

However, I'm also a Star Wars fan who thought Rogue One totally and completely rocked it out of the park. Loved it loved it loved it! Went and saw it in the theaters like 4 times, including giving up a free day to go see it on a BIG screen. It’s so good. The novelization was good too. I’m a fan of Everyone Lives/Krennic dies AUs or Some People Live/Some People Die.

I love the original three (ROTJ is my favorite).

I enjoyed the sequels (although that like is dwindling more every time I see a stupid handwave plot post) but didn’t LOVE them, especially after the ridiculously evident fact that they DIDN’T HAVE A PLAN.

I am NOT a fan of the prequels. I wanted to like them, but I just couldn’t get past Phantom Menace and the stupidity of traveling around with young Obi-Wan Kenobi and falling for Anakin.

I’m not familiar with the animated SW shows, and my ignoring the prequels means I also missed all the “Jedi don’t have emotional attachments” which maybe should have gone down as a bad idea.

I’m not familiar with most of the Disney shows BUT I did enjoy Kenobi quite a bit. I loved Tala and little Leia and Beru.

I did enjoy the zaniness of the Star Wars Lego Holiday special, so feel free to play off that.

My heart is with the original 3 (and Rogue One, now that it exists) and the "waved away" Extended Universe. The more they make me feel like it requires me to do homework, the less interested I am.

I'm also not really a Luke fan. Give me Han and Wedge any day of the week. And maybe Ben Kenobi. Or an AU where Biggs Darklighter becomes the most famous pilot from Tatooine. And maybe find some way to make Rey a Kenobi descendant…? I really wanted her to be a Kenobi descendant. I still want her to be a Kenobi somehow.

Teneniel/Luke - I just really loved the vibe they have together. So explore that more. I generally am a Mara/Luke shipper as well but something about these two just speaks to me.

Corran/Mirax - The smartass flyboy meets the smart smuggler. What else do we NEED?

Wedge/Leia - So this is my every year request. I just want this. Like a fling, or FWB or more.

Nawara/Rhysati - These two were also interesting (feel free to pair with Corran/Mirax for a spectacular double date).

Tycho/Winter - I would really just love something soft for these two, maybe aftermath of the trial?

Teneniel/Luke – A fling on Dathomir? I just enjoy them. Feel free to blend with another request.

Corran/Mirax - I'm always down for Corran/Mirax and their relationship. (Combining them with Han/Leia could be very fun. Maybe some diplomatic event that gets steadily less boring? Corellia related? Mirax and Han swapping stories?). I love Mirax and Corran, especially when she takes him down a few notches, as he so often NEEDS.

Wedge/Leia - I think a fling could have happened, a little stress relief...

Keep them in the X-Wing or original series timeframe. Leia is gone when Wedge finally makes his appearance in TLJ, but you could do something with that, him remembering her as friends or more. I'd love to see more of this relationship, especially as it is portrayed in the Legends book. Or if you want to take it to TLJ, that would also be acceptable.

Nawara/Rhysati – Stolen moments in Rogue Squadron? What happens after? And when I say “spectacular double date” it probably involves jail or explosions.

Tycho/Winter - I’d love something soft and fluffy and sweet for them (or maybe a little spicy). Feel free to combine with Wedge/Leia. Tycho/Winter deserve a quiet moment (and maybe a little disbelief that it’s over?)

I love love love Wedge Antilles. I'd love something set during original movies, X-Wing books or maybe a look at what he's doing in Last Jedi (or why he's NOT doing anything). I like Poe, but he's no Wedge Antilles.

I admit to a preference for the Wedge of the Rogue Squadron books, with the sly humor and him as the Commander of the Rogues (and their craziness). Maybe an AU where Biggs is in there with him? You could keep Gavin around as well.

Not really much to add besides WHERE ARE ALL THE PILOTS in the later movies?

I have a great affection for Biggs as well, and would love to see him and Gavin hanging out (maybe include Wedge). Or maybe Biggs lives and becomes the most famous pilot a planet called Tatooine ever produced....

Teneniel & Mara - Just don't put Teneniel in the fridge like they do later in the series. I loved young Teneniel and was super disapointed to see what they did to her.

Corran & Nejaa - I'd love to see Corran getting a force ghost visit from his grandfather.

Tala Durith and Jyn could be interesting (or Lyra … or all 3). Down time or mission time would be good. Lyra and Jyn escape and join the Rebellion? I’m here for it. Involving Tala (another candidate for Not Dying) would be awesome as well.

I love the idea that all the Corellians could be drinking buddies, and I am 100% here for the idea that Corellians may have a higher percentage of people who use the Force on a subconscious level but think they’re just lucky. Never tell them the odds.

I’m also totally down for you poking some gentle fun at CorSec Corran Horn being a little twitchy at being surrounded by the Corellian Rogues Gallery, even if he is involved with/married to one.

The Victorian villain Spring-Heeled Jack terrorized England from 1837 through the turn of the century, stalking the streets at night and making a nuisance of himself. He frightened people (and horses) with his sudden appearances and even more memorable disappearances.

If you met him on the street, you might take Jack for a gentleman— except for his silver claws and flaming eyes. He also had the ability to escape pursuers by leaping tall buildings in a single bound— thus the “spring-heeled” nickname.

Vampires are often created by conditions at death, whether it be an especially violent end, death in a state of sin, or death due to predation by another vampire. But there are also vampires created by conditions at birth, which could make your character spend their life as a vampire, pre-death. A partial list includes children born with a caul, the seventh child of a seventh child who are all the same sex, or a child born during the 12 days of Christmas (Dec 25-Jan 6). You can also have living vampires created by their own actions, such as sorcery, deals with the devil, or just being really evil.

One of the downsides of working from home (also not having a car but that's more about convenience in this particular case) is that getting to church for Ash Wednesday is more of a struggle for me. When I still went into my office, I could take a longer lunch and go up to the church closest to me for the noontime service. Last year, I was able to go since it was on the way home from a training and figured at the very least I could get ashes on the corner if I didn't make the service over at St. Paul's. As luck would have it, I made the service. I don't go to church regularly much anymore but St. Paul's is a good place to go when I do.

This year, my time is stacked because I've to to leave work early for something else and I didn't necessarily want to take the whole day off. I did do the readings for the day, which conveniently come in email (yay, technology). Also, I have chosen a saint for Lent Madness - this is new for me but hey, having saints duking it out in a March Madness style bracket cracks me up. I am pulling for Marina the Monk, who wanted to join a monastary rather than get married (her dad was going to marry her off and join a monastary himself and she said nope, let's be monks together) and dressed as a a young man to join up.I was previously unfamiliar with her story but the Episcopal Church added her to the liturgical calendar in 2022. She's been long venerated in Easter Orthodox and Coptic Orthodox Churches.

I love saint stories. They start out pretty tame but then you run into something like, "Oh, by the way, there was that thing with the snakes and it was pretty amazing."

Yeah, no excuse for not posting until Thursday, other than 'I got distracted'. I mean, work is ridiculously busy, but not that ridiculously busy. And I'm guessing I'll probably be late next week, too, because Monday's a holiday, and I'll probably be busy enjoying actual above-freezing temperatures outside! In February! Crazy talk!

In other good news, after all my screaming last week about how I have a competition at the end of February and I haven't run my new program cleanly yet, I promptly proceeded to...run my program cleanly only two days later. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Figure skating, seriously! If you want a sport that will fuck with your head constantly, this is absolutely it. Every new program, it's like, "What if I secretly actually don't know how to ice skate, and somehow neither I nor my coaches noticed it all along?!"

For the record (just because it seems timely), I have watched a bit of the olympics (the only place I can find access to only shows me brief snippets, though, and usually only US athletes who are often not the ones I care about 😔), so I watched a bit of the team event for figure skating, which is not my favorite event (justice for synchro!), but it was...all right. I liked Kagiyama (who is the only non-US skater my entertainment options allowed me to watch 🙃). Mostly, I'm obsessed with curling and biathlon, though. They both look very hard and very silly! (Someday, in theory, I could go to an intro 'learn curling' thingy - one of the rinks I frequent has one every so often, yet I never go it because I feel like I already spend enough time in ice rinks...)

Anyway, enough of that, on to fandom stuff:

Exchanges due in January/February (fffx, Just The Tip flash, Fisting Flash, candyheartsex, seasonofdrabbles, threesentenceficathon + mystery pinch-hits and treats + future sign-ups): I'm currently at 12/13, and the one outstanding is for caseficexchange. I had some good inspiration on how to transition from the 3rd-act climax to the final act, so that's good. I do worry a bit on the final word count of this fic, though. I generally target 10k-ish for a case fic, but this one might go long, like, 20k long (hopefully not more than that). I've got more than enough time to write that much, but still it's freaking me out a little. But my goal this week is to get the next scene/chapter done, which is feasible. With that, I'm guessing I'm not going to sneak in any more last-second treats on anything else, but who knows?

Stuff I got/wrote: seasonofdrabbles came and revealed last week. I only requested single drabbles this time around, because that's the format I understand best. But my thing this season (which I knew would be unpopular, but whatevs) is that I felt like I didn't fully grok the drabble-series format and how to use it, so I intentionally shopped around for prompts/requests where I felt I could apply it. And I think I succeeded pretty well, to the point where I get now why I'd want to request it. I'm still not sold on double/triple drabbles as a format - they end up feeling like ficlets to me and not a distinct form (which, y'know, ficlets are great, but not something I want to do for a rare exchange that gives me an opportunity to delve in deep to playing with format) so I still need to ponder those more (possibly in future rounds) and see if I can hone in on either of those. I did see someone do a neat thing with a drabble series where they went: triple drabble => double drabble => single drabble, and that's something I need to noodle on and see if I can come up with other use cases.

TLDR version: I am a nerd, and I love that drabbles give me opportunities to explore my nerdiness. Anyway, here's what's the what.

Stuff I got:
- For Sale - Real-estate listing for the Haunting of Hill House, very nice! The realtor lingo is absolutely perfect, and I love the 'ad' as a unit for a drabble: works so well with the medium! (And also I had a bit of a chuckle that my creator used the same title I did for one my treats: clearly, we're on the same wavelength!)
- Hazy - Cute Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan drabble, outsider perspective of their weird supernatural bullshit + extreme horniness, very funny and cute!
- closing the gap - HOLY SHIT, someone actually wrote me Bedelia/Miriam Lass for Hannibal! 😍 No, seriously, I was the only other person who had written this pairing on AO3 before! And, as I'd expected, someone else's work gave me new angles to appreciate about it! Wow, I've been requesting this one off and on for over a year now and am blown away to have finally gotten it.
Stuff I wrote:
- Pink Shadow: The Autobiography of a Swine (Cliff Notes Excerpts) - For this Gary Larson comic, lol. This was my main assignment, a single-drabble series. Okay, so I saw this request last minute, and rushed to my sign-up to offer it, because that is the sort of thing I will do if someone posts a great crack!prompt like this. I was the first person to post anything for The Far Side as a canon (really?!), too, so that was another cool thing. And this one let me not only play with Gary Larson's typical ridiculous language (which, let's face it, combined with Monty Python, is probably where about 90% of my sense of humor comes from), but also the drabble-series format, so I had loads of fun with it. My general goals were to make each of the drabbles such that it could stand alone, and also to build the theme of the incoming terrible pig-pun throughout. And then, for each drabble, I paralleled a different 'section' of the Black Shadow book (which I swear in my head actually existed), and my made-up mash-up horsey book had 5 sections, even though Black Beauty (which I used as my immediate reference) only had 4. And that is probably much more serious and analytical than any reasonable person should be over a very silly comic, but y'know...I know what my tragic flaws are. 😝
- The Lives We Lived Apart - A Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan PH I picked up for Guardian, single-drabble series. For this one, the prompt about Zhao Yunlan's past lives is what drew me in. So I set up the drabble series with each life as a drabble, which each lifetime having him get further away from Kunlun's original godhood towards the Zhao Yunlan we all know and love. Part of the inspiration came from Shen San's name and San = 3, so that gave me my 'chapter' headings. And then to pull the whole thing together, I had the final drabble as Kunlun wondering what will happen to him as he becomes human. I think this was a neat way to do a drabble series: each one was a separate life, but there was an overarching theme. Around this time, I was really starting to get into the whole concept of a drabble-series as a format.
- Forbidden Fruit - A Phoenix/Edgeworth treat, single drabble. But I do still love single drabbles, how one of the more effective ways to do so is to hinge everything on a 'punchline', and "Objection!" was too perfect a punchline to not use. (FWIW my file of Ace Attorney notes/incomplete snippets that lives on my computer has the filename 'Objection'.)
- Suits You, Wright - Also a Phoenix/Edgeworth single drabble, this time a PH. So, funny story, I'd posted the previous drabble as a treat and, like, the next day the same recipient came up as a PH. I debated trying to convert my treat for all of three seconds and then was, like, no, I can write them a proper gift, too. I didn't get much dialogue in with the last one, so that was my target here.
- For Sale - House of Leaves, a drabble-series treat. Right, so, I had requested House of Leaves as a single drabble and I'd written something for it back in Fic In A Box, and have also been poking around at some other fan creations for it (seriously this Doom mod is AMAZING, and I know nothing about Doom, lol), so at some point I got to thinking, 'Could I use a drabble series as a way to simulate the house?' And, as soon as I starting thinking about the idea, I felt SUPER BAD that I hadn't requested a drabble series myself, because it felt mean to my hypothetical fantasy treater who absolutely does not exist and was me. 😝 The more I thought about the idea, the more I came up with cool ways I could try to make each drabble in the series a room and a separate horror mini-story, and it also let me play with interactive fiction, which is another thing that I love doing that is otherwise super unpopular, lol. There was a while there where I didn't know if I'd have time to pull it off, and I knew no one other than me had requested this canon, but then I was checking through the app to look for things to treat, and I saw a CCOF prompt that was basically 'give me your weird shit no one else will ever request' plus some relevant likes that I could aim towards. So, once I saw that, I got the motivation to buckle down and actually write the thing and, more importantly, code the thing: my House of Leaves workskin is getting pretty wild these days, lol. I had loads of fun with this! And I think it turned out pretty cool, especially as a more experimental way to use the drabble-series format.
- Remote - Another single-drabble treat, Bakugo & his parents for BNHA. I spotted this on the treatless sheet, and it's the same characters I always request, so I figured I'd have a try at writing the (very weird) Bakugo family, and it was fun, as promised!
Exchanges due in March/April: unsent_letters_exchange has nominations/sign-ups starting soon, hooray! However, worldbuilding_exchange is not running again, alas, although it seems like there's a possibility that someone else will run a new event with the same theme, TBD. And then there are other things I'm keeping my eye on for treats/PHs: goreswap, Love You A Latte, spaceswap, wickedloveex, the_mane_event. And, at the tail end of this period, fandom5k will start up.

Okay, so, I think my adventures with the library holds list are HILARIOUS, so I will share the genius thing I did this time. I've had the first volume of Sha Po Lang by priest on my holds list for a while, waiting until I get to the top. I finally got there, and the person who has the 1 library copy was supposed to have it due back on 2/2 - 10 days ago. And yet it kept not turning up, not turning up, the person before me was clearly late. Now, I've had it before when the person before me was SUPER late and/or eventually the copy was declared lost, and I was worried that would happen again. So, after a week of nothing moving, I decided to put something else on my holds list so I would have a hard-copy book to read again: I added The Angel of the Crows by Katherine Addison, which had no wait list. Now, given my luck with the library holds list, who can guess what happened? Yup! They BOTH came in at the same time, and now instead of having nothing to read, I have too much again! 😭 Seriously, I am so bad at this. The library holds list has defeated me, total KO, I don't even know why I bother trying anymore, other than for the lulz. So...anyway, I guess I'll be reading both of these next week!

The Night Manager S2 - I finished watching this, and: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! How dare you end on a cliffhanger? And kill the hot guy who was flirting with Tom Hiddleston? 😭 It was good, though, just... Not the ending I wanted, lol.

Succession - Okay, so I've got the first season of this out from the library. I knew there were two ways I could go on this one: either it would be so Fox News I couldn't stomach it, given the current political climate, or else it would have potential. I'm not quite halfway through S1, and I definitely haven't rage-quit the way I feared I might, but I wouldn't say I'm really liking it yet, either. It's kind of at the 'decent entertainment but I'm not invested' stage. I will give it at least through S1, because at this point in I was 'meh' on Hannibal, too. We'll see where I end up on this one! (However, Kendall lost MAJOR forever points for making the ICU staff's lives worse. Just: NO! ICU people deserve all the nice things, and I want to slap the whole family for the way they acted. Like, apparently this is my secret DNW that I never knew I had: People being jerks to ICU personnel, lol.)

Goals for next week: 1) Write some more on Case Fic. 2) Watch more Succession. 3) Read my way through my stack of accumulating books. 4) I should probably do an edit pass on my FFFX fic before it sneaks up on me.

So, there are things and then there are Things. The big thing is that over the past few years I've been having intermittent pain in my right leg and hip. It started when I was rounding a corner at the Oakland Marathon 5K back in 2023. The only way I can describe it is that I stepped wrong; suddenly my hip got real twitchy and I was thinking, "Well fuck, what is this?"

Cue me not really thinking about it that much until I started having moment's where the muscles in my right leg would go slack for no good reason. i could still move my leg and what not but it just felt like the muscles went dead and then would come back online with everything feeling super tired and the like. But I kept on with doing what I was doing: walking, biking. Also sitting because I work from home. I sit a lot. Probably an unhealthy amount.

Anyway, fast forward to last year: my legs hadn't been great which meant I hadn't really been training like I usually do. On a good day, I can knock out 3 miles (my house to downtown Oakland and back) and not even think about it but it was becoming harder to do. I walked the Oakland Marathon 5K, San Francisco Marathon 5K and Berkeley Half 5K. The Berkley Half was where I finally realized that something might really not be okay. The last part of the course takes us into the campus, past Sather Gate and then an incline up towards the Campanile. I absolutely detest that section but I know it's there and normally I bitch in my head about it but I do it. Last year I had to stop. Really stop. My hip was barking and so was my leg. Not good.

I finished but I was also meeting a friend who was doing the 10K so I had to walk down from the Crescent to Civic Center Park where all the festivities were. Not a problem but I could feel my leg twitching and my brain was trying to suss out what I was feeling. While waiting for my friend, i had a chance to talk to one of the PT folks who was there doing post race assessments (mostly to drum up business), but she did give me some good advice - i.e. it might be this thing but go talk to your primary doctor, which I did; she thought it might be sciatica. I had some preliminary imaging done; right hip, knee and my lumbar spine. And got a referral to PT at Berkeley Community PT.

So, the upshot is this: my lumbar spine is compressed like whoa and things aren't real happy which translates to the issues with my hip and leg. I have some degenerative things happening but that's mostly due to age. I've been in PT for just over a month which means I have homework.I also now have a referral to orthopedics at UCSF. They'll probably do more imaging and make a recommendation for next steps.

Right now, as much as all of this is a pain in the ass, I am thankful I have full insurance to cover it. Shirley is also feeling the aches and pains of her job but trying to get her to go get some body work done beyond seeing our chiropractor is a lot. I make vague noises like, "Hey, you know, the acupuncturist has some time."

The biggest thing in all of this is having to acknowledge that I am getting older (we both turned 60 last year) and my body is changing into a newer configuration. None of what is happening is insurmountable but how I engage with sport and exercise are changing. Right now, I'm not doing a lot beyond PT because I don't want to aggravate anything. My Garmin sits there and accuses me of not getting enough steps in.Lol. I do have new trekking poles and I use those for walking for the extra support but I also have a touch of plantar fasciatis right now so I'm not doing a lot of that.

It rains, it pours. I remain salty about it.
